Cleveland
The Rock and Roll Capital of the World is experiencing a cultural renaissance in its emerging modern downtown.
eneral Moses Cleaveland founded the city in 1796, but
it was the industrial boom
of the late 19th century that
shaped Cleveland's image for
years to come. Its proximity to Lake Erie, one of the five Great Lakes, accessibility to transcontinental railroads, and a ready workforce contributed to many prosperous years of steelmaking, manufacturing. and garment-making.
Remnants of those early industrial roots
are seen and celebrated all over town and remain central to Cleveland's identity as the region is in the midst of an exciting renaissance that has residents, newcomers, and visitors excited and optimistic. Cleveland has earned its place on the global stage as a center of biotechnology, research, and health innovation, led by two venerable institutions-The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and University Hospitals. A new downtown convention center and the Global Center for Health
Innovation are two significant elements of an emerging modern downtown that includes new hotels, entertainment districts, the Horseshoe Casino (Ohio's first), and numerous downtown residential complexes.
Traditions and heritage The Cleveland experience is a celebration of diversity. Within Cleveland's borders are dozens of unique neighborhoods where families live, work, and shop
just as their ancestors did, keeping the traditions alive from their native European, Russian, Mexican, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern homelands. Experience the city's rich cultural heritage by visiting the cultural gardens along Martin Luther King Drive each unique site created and dedicated by immigrants and their descendants from those destinations.
